NJ EMT Class FAQs

Below, Joe Borer, On Time VP of North Operations, answers a few common questions about EMT classes and what a new student can expect.

How much do classes typically cost?

Standard pricing across New Jersey for EMT Classes is around $1,500. You will typically need to submit a non-refundable $300 payment up front, plus the remaining $1,200 during the course of the class. Some medical transportation companies offer tuition reimbursement and will pay you the EMT class fee back after you work for a certain amount of time.

If you're riding as a volunteer, the class is covered under the New Jersey State Training Fund. In that case, your squad will give you a voucher.

How long does the class take to complete?

That depends on which type of EMT class you choose. There are two types. One is the hybrid class which is a summer course that you can do in two months. The second is a traditional in-person course that takes up to six months.

Whichever course you end up choosing, keep in mind that the curriculums are very fast-paced and are at a college-level.

What happens when you finish the EMT class? Can you get hired right away?

After you pass your EMT class, you'll need to take the state test and and receive the results from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). Once you pass that examination, you are ready to perform the duties of an EMT.

Students typically take the state test about two weeks after they complete and pass the course. You can even receive your results the same day --- or within a week.

Often times, during your class, recruiters will come in to scout the students. They'll go in and speak to everyone and explain their opportunities and available positions.

What's your advice for someone who just passed their EMT certification and is nervous about taking the state exam?

Look over the course information that the instructors gave you. They're giving you close pointers of what will be covered on the exam. Everything is covered in the textbooks. Study hard and don't forget your practical skills. It all comes back to you when you're actually doing it, but this testing is all done on a computer.

What's your advice on getting hired?

Start in a private sector service first before 911. Many people like to jump right into the 911 scene. But at the end of the day, you really need to gain your clinical skills first, and going into 911 isn't the answer for that. Get at least one to one-and-a-half years of non-emergency transport and then slowly enter into the 911 field. This way it's not all new to you.

What else should an aspiring EMT know about NJ EMT classes?

They are lengthy and fast-paced because it's not just in the classroom. There's also heavy homework that you'll have to complete for the course. A lot of it is web-based, so you're logging into a program that you'll do everything online and your instructor sees the homework is being done. Make sure you carve out the time to get that accomplished.

How did you come to know so much about EMS?

I became an EMT at 16-years-old and volunteered for the West New York Squad in Hudson County. I had a couple of options in life --- either to continue on as an EMT or pursue other things.

I really had a knack for understanding the business in general. I also had 911 experience. As you progress from volunteering to a paid service, and then into a hospital-based service, and back into a private service, you gain a lot of experience.

How many EMTs do you personally know in New Jersey?

I'd say about 300. 😀
